John Barclay Blue Coal's distinguished heating expert

In the middle of the Shadow program or at the end, the announcer would introduce John Barclay, Blue Coal's distinguished heating expert. Although you never saw him (except maybe in a few ads), you got the picture of an older man who addressed the audience like a professional speaker. He would advise...

Zenith Arm Chair Radio

Thanks for posting the Life Magazine on the remote control Zenith. It sure jogged my memory. I recall that my aunt and uncle had such a radio. I remember sitting in the big arm chair and thinking how great it was to control the radio from clear across the room. Wonder what one of those would cost to...

Smiley Burnette Show

I recall hearing one program, orobably the first in the series, where Smiley talks to the audience. He reminds them that he was with a lot of cowboy stars in movies. He starts to list them and the audience applauds each time. "Gene Autry...Roy Rogers...the Durango Kid..." Then he says "Johnny Mack B...

Re: Where's Summerfield supposed to be?

I know that it's never clear exactly where Summerfield is supposed to be, but while listening to a New Year's Eve show from the late 40's, Gildy tunes into a radio broadcast (presumably in New York ) where they're already celebrating an hour ahead of Summerfield. Does anyone recall any other clues ...

Rex had two sidekicks. Buddy Ebsen was first but Slim Pickens is probably better remembered and finished out the series with Rex.

No, signalman, Don Knotts played Windy Wales, a garrolous old timer on the Bobby Benson B-Bar-B program. Knotts was only in his twenties at the time.

Jack Benny arrested for smuggling

The following anecdote is no way meant to discredit Benny as a comedian or tarnish his image in this forum designed to honor him. In 1938, Jack Benny and George Burns were arrested by federal authorities and brought before a New York magistrate to answer charges of smuggling. They had received gifts...

Kremer's Drugstore

Hi Steve: I just read your article on your grandfather's drugstore and really enjoyed the photo of him serving the customer. Fortunately somebody thought to take that photo to show what the inside of the drugstore looked like. I noticed that he had a candy counter with one of those scoops to scoop u...

Tom Mix Ralston Straight Shooters

In surfing the Net, I came across a site with the old radio premiums that you got when you sent in a dime and a boxtop. They were offering six picture buttons from the Tom Mix Ralston Straight Shooters program. Each button had a cast member pictured on it. There was one of Wash, the Afro-American co...

The Lonely Sleep

This episode from 1945 tells the story of a lonely window dresser who is mocked by a woman who works in the same store as he and won't go out with him. What transpires is pure Inner Sanctum OTR. Karl Swenson, who was Lorenzo Jones, the eccentric inventor on the popular soap opera, plays the lead rol...

Hal Peary and Willard Waterman appearing on Tom Mix OTR

How many of you ever heard the story of Hal Peary or Willard Waterman appearing on the old Tom Mix Ralston Straight Shooters program as Sheriff Mike Shaw? Not sure where I heard it but I think I saw it in Jim Harmon's book, "The Great Radio Heroes" which came out in about 1967. Not to dispute Mr. Ha...

Today's kids relating to old OTR mystery shows

Dear Raul: I don't know how old you are or how much you know about today's kids, but it seems to me that everything has to be either spelled out for them or "dumbed down" so that they can understand it. The comics that they have now are not appealing to the 10 and 11 year olds, but to the junior or ...

Hound of Baskervilles episode unearthed

I have just finished listening to the fifth episode of Hound of the Baskervilles, starring Rathbone and Bruce. It seems to cut off about midway through the program, shortly after Rathbone makes his appearance. Watson has been sending him letters to keep him up to date on events at Baskerville Hall. ...
